( plated ) HAIR Serum Review: Do Exosomes Really Regrow Hair?
Most hair-loss products are sold on a photograph and a promise. ( plated ) HAIR Serum arrived in Canada with something almost nobody else in the category brings: a published, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with instrument-measured endpoints. So we did the boring thing and read it.
This is the honest version, written from handling the line and reading the primary literature rather than the brand deck. ( plated ) HAIR Serum is now available at WeDoSkin for $530 CAD for a 30 mL bottle, and it is genuinely one of the more interesting products to enter the Canadian market in years. It is also expensive, slow, and not right for everyone. Both things are true.
The short answer: if your thinning is diffuse, early-to-moderate, and you want a non-hormonal option with real clinical data behind it, this is the strongest at-home option currently sold in Canada. If you have advanced pattern baldness with fully dormant follicles, no topical is going to fix that, and this one will not either.
What exactly is ( plated ) HAIR Serum?
It is a once-daily scalp serum built around platelet-derived exosomes. Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles that cells release to talk to each other, carrying proteins, growth factors, and nucleic acids. In wound healing, platelets are the body's first responders, and the exosomes they release carry the instructions that tell surrounding tissue to repair.
The ( plated ) approach, developed on more than two decades of Mayo Clinic physician-scientist research and commercialised by Rion Aesthetics, is to purify those platelet-derived exosomes and stabilise them in a shelf-stable topical. They call the delivery system Renewosome. Every 30 mL bottle carries more than two trillion of them.
That number sounds like marketing, and partly it is. But the mechanism it points at is real and it is different from everything else on the shelf. Minoxidil widens blood vessels. Finasteride blocks an enzyme. Ketoconazole shampoos reduce inflammation. Exosome therapy works upstream of all of that, on the signalling environment of the scalp itself.

The science, explained without the hand-waving
1. Why the scalp environment matters more than the strand
Androgenic alopecia is not really hair falling out. It is follicle miniaturisation: each growth cycle produces a slightly finer, shorter hair until the follicle produces nothing visible. Two things drive it. The first is dihydrotestosterone accumulating around the follicle. The second, less discussed, is chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress in the surrounding tissue, which damages the dermal papilla cells that orchestrate the whole growth cycle.
Almost every conditioner, thickening spray, and volumising mousse works on the second half of that equation not at all. They coat the strand. ( plated ) targets the first half: it aims to improve the tissue environment in which the follicle has to operate.
2. What the exosomes are proposed to do
The mechanism proposed in the literature is that platelet-derived exosomes encourage proliferation and activation of dormant hair follicle stem cells, prolong the anagen (active growth) phase, and support the transition from telogen back into anagen. There is also an anti-inflammatory component, modulating the immune response and reducing the perifollicular microinflammation that contributes to miniaturisation in the first place.
Worth being precise here: this is the proposed mechanism, described in the discussion section of the published study. The clinical outcomes are measured; the mechanism is inferred. Anyone telling you exactly how it works at a molecular level in human scalp is ahead of the evidence.
3. The supporting cast in the formula
The exosomes get the headline, but the rest of the ingredient list is thoughtfully built. Biotin supports follicle structure. Panthenol and hyaluronic acid hydrate the scalp. Carnosine and turmeric root extract bring antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, which matters given the oxidative-stress mechanism above. Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 amide is a signalling peptide. Arginine supports microcirculation. There are no sulphates, no oils, and no silicones.
The clinical study, read properly
The trial was published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open in March 2025 (Weir et al., 2025;13:e6562). It was single-centre, prospective, double-blind, and placebo-controlled, which is a meaningfully higher bar than the consumer-perception studies most hair brands cite.
Thirty-nine participants, men and women aged 18 to 65 with self-perceived thinning hair, were enrolled. Thirty-one received the active serum for nine months; eight received a glycerin-vehicle placebo for six months and then crossed over. Endpoints included blinded live-evaluator scoring, participant self-assessment, HairMetrix trichoscopy, and independent blinded physician photograph review.

The between-group data is where it gets convincing. At month 6, the active group scored 1.17 on hair density against −0.13 for placebo, and 1.17 on scalp coverage against −0.25 for placebo, both at p < 0.0001. The placebo group was not merely improving less; on those measures it was drifting backwards, which is what untreated progressive thinning looks like. And when the placebo group crossed over to the active serum, every hair parameter improved within three months.
The honest caveats. Thirty-nine participants is a pilot, not a phase III. The control arm was small, at eight people. Randomisation was deliberately weighted 80/20 toward the active arm. Fitzpatrick types V and VI were not represented, which the authors themselves flag as a limitation for future work. The study was funded in part by Rion Aesthetics and several authors declare consulting relationships. None of that invalidates the findings, and the blinding and instrument-measured endpoints are genuinely strong. It does mean this is promising early evidence rather than settled science, and anyone presenting it as the latter is overselling.

Our take: minoxidil remains the cheapest evidence-backed option and it works for a lot of people, so if you have not tried it and tolerate it, start there. ( plated ) earns its place for a specific person — someone who could not tolerate minoxidil, or shed badly on it, or wants a non-hormonal route, or is already spending on PRP and wants to hold the gains between sessions. How to build a hair protocol that actually works
A serum alone is a partial answer. The routines that produce real change treat the scalp like skin.
Weeks 1–4: establish the base
Apply HAIR Serum once daily to a clean, towel-dried or dry scalp, one to two pre-loaded droppers along the part and any thinning areas. Massage in, wait five minutes, then style as normal. Switch to a clarifying, sulphate-conscious cleanser so product buildup is not sitting on the follicle. Take baseline photographs in consistent lighting — you will not remember accurately in six months, and this is the single most useful thing you can do today.
Weeks 4–12: layer the support

Five mistakes that quietly waste your money

Over nine months, blinded evaluators recorded statistically significant improvement in hair density, scalp coverage, and volume within the active group, with separation from placebo at months 3 and 6. HairMetrix trichoscopy independently confirmed a 13.14% increase in hairs per square centimetre and a 15.42% increase in total hair width at month 9. That is real, instrument-measured change, not a survey.
How long does it take to see results?
Blinded evaluators saw measurable change from month 1, but hair biology sets the honest timeline. Give it three months before forming an opinion and six to nine months for the change that shows up in photographs. The study data climbed steadily across all nine months, which suggests results compound rather than plateau early.
How does it compare to minoxidil?
They work by completely different mechanisms. Minoxidil is a vasodilator applied twice daily, and it commonly triggers a temporary shedding phase plus scalp dryness and itching. HAIR Serum uses platelet-derived exosomes to support the scalp renewal environment, applied once daily, with no adverse events reported in its clinical study. Is it worth $530?
That depends on your alternative. A 30 mL bottle is a two to three month supply, so roughly $6 to $9 a day.
