SkinCeuticals TNXA-SHOT Review: The 5% Tranexamic Acid Serum Replacing Discoloration Defense (2026)
Discoloration Defense is gone. TNXA-SHOT takes its place with 5% tranexamic acid, two new actives and a serum texture you will actually use. Worth $170? Read on.

Every retailer in Canada that sells SkinCeuticals got the same email this week: Discoloration Defense is discontinued, and a new serum called TNXA-SHOT Discoloration Defense ships to clinics on November 2 and to the public on November 16. The brand calls it "a brightening shot in a serum". Our first reaction was the one you would expect from a clinic that has recommended the original to hundreds of people: what exactly changed, and is it better or just newer?
So we read the launch deck the way we read every launch deck, ingredient by ingredient, claim by claim, and with a highlighter for the sentences that are marketing rather than chemistry. The short version is that TNXA-SHOT is a different product, not a repackage. The tranexamic acid went from 3% to 5%, two actives were added to go after the triggers behind persistent pigment, kojic acid and HEPES are gone, and the texture has been rebuilt from scratch.
This is the honest version: what is in the bottle, what each active actually does on skin, who should buy it and who should not, how it fits with Phloretin CF, C E Ferulic and retinol, and the one thing we will not do, which is quote results from a clinical study the brand has not finished. WeDoSkin.ca is an authorized Canadian SkinCeuticals retailer; this is written from the formula and the brand's own documentation, not from a press release.
SkinCeuticals TNXA-SHOT Discoloration Defense ($170 CAD, 30 mL) is the successor to Discoloration Defense and a clear upgrade: 5% tranexamic acid (up from 3%), 3% Endophytol and 1% alpha-amino acid for pollution- and hormone-triggered pigment, 4% niacinamide, SymWhite 377, LHA and carnosine, in a milky-white serum tested on all skin tones. Buy it if you have persistent dark spots or brown patches that keep returning, especially around laser season. Pair it with a morning vitamin C such as Phloretin CF ($230) and a mineral SPF such as Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 ($68). It launches in Canada on November 16, 2026.
What Changed From Discoloration Defense
The original Discoloration Defense was a good serum with an honest problem: it was yellow, it was sticky, and 3% tranexamic acid was enough for everyday dark spots and not quite enough for the stubborn ones. SkinCeuticals has addressed all three. Here is the formula side by side, with nothing added that the brand did not state.
Out: 3% tranexamic acid, 1% kojic acid, 5% HEPES, 5% niacinamide
That was the whole active list of the old formula. Kojic acid is a respectable tyrosinase inhibitor but it is unstable and it is part of why the old serum yellowed in the bottle. HEPES was a mild exfoliating buffer. Niacinamide at 5% was the workhorse. All four are retired or reduced.
In: 5% tranexamic acid, 3% Endophytol, 1% alpha-amino acid
This trio is the patent-pending complex the launch is built around. The tranexamic acid dose is 40% higher than before and the highest SkinCeuticals has formulated. Endophytol is a dandelion-root extract that L'Oreal patented and already put in the 2026 C E Ferulic; here it is at 3% to blunt pollution-triggered pigment. The alpha-amino acid is new to the line and targets the hormonal pathway behind brown patches.
In: 4% niacinamide, 0.15% SymWhite 377, 0.15% LHA, 0.2% carnosine
The second complex handles the mechanics of pigment once the triggers have been quieted. Niacinamide drops to 4% but is now paired with SymWhite 377 (phenylethyl resorcinol), one of the stronger tyrosinase inhibitors available in cosmetics. LHA replaces HEPES as the surface exfoliant, and carnosine arrives as an antioxidant and anti-glycation dipeptide. The texture is now milky-white, lightweight and fresh. Anyone who abandoned the original because it felt like glue should give this one a second look.
How TNXA-SHOT Works, Pathway by Pathway
Persistent discolouration is not one problem. Pigment is triggered (by UV, pollution, hormones and the skin's stress response), then produced inside the melanocyte, then transferred up into surface cells, then sits there until those cells shed. A serum that only hits one step leaves three doors open. TNXA-SHOT is interesting because it was designed around all four.
Step 1: Quiet the alarm (5% tranexamic acid, 3% Endophytol, 1% alpha-amino acid)
Tranexamic acid reduces the synthesis of PGE2, the messenger that tells melanocytes to overproduce after sun, heat or hormonal change. Endophytol binds the aryl hydrocarbon receptor that pollution particles use to switch pigment on. The alpha-amino acid intercepts alpha-MSH, the hormone behind hormone-triggered brown patches. Three triggers, three interceptions. This is the part of the formula that makes it a serum for persistent pigment rather than for a few summer freckles.
Step 2: Make less (0.15% SymWhite 377)
SymWhite 377 binds and deactivates tyrosinase, the enzyme that turns tyrosine into melanin. 0.15% sounds small; it is a potent molecule and that is a normal cosmetic dose. The brand describes it as inspired by antioxidant compounds in pine bark, which is a nice story and not the reason it works.
Step 3: Move less (4% niacinamide)
Whatever pigment is still produced gets packaged into melanosomes and handed up to surface cells. Niacinamide slows that hand-off, so less of what is made ever shows on the face. It is also the active that keeps the formula comfortable on reactive skin.
Step 4: Shed and protect (0.15% LHA, 0.2% carnosine)
LHA is L'Oreal's lipid-soluble cousin of salicylic acid. It penetrates slowly and exfoliates cell by cell, which is why it can sit in a twice-daily serum without the sting of a glycolic. It sheds the pigment-loaded surface cells already on display and improves texture at the same time. Carnosine mops up the free radicals from UV and pollution and interrupts glycation, the sugar-to-collagen bonding that yellows and dulls skin over time.
The Laser Question: What "Resists Lasers Alone" Means
Why clinics asked for this
SkinCeuticals built TNXA-SHOT with laser clinics in mind, and the launch material says so plainly. Pigment that sits deep or is hormonally driven, particularly on deeper skin tones, often does not fully clear with in-office laser, needs several rounds, and comes back when the triggers return. Lasers remove pigment; they do not switch off the signal that made it. A topical that works on the signal, used before and after sessions, is the missing half of the protocol. SkinCeuticals reports TNXA-SHOT is physician-tested to complement laser treatments, and its Canadian testing was designed alongside picosecond and Q-switched devices.
What we will not claim yet
The brand's clinical study on the final formula is still in progress at launch, and so is its 14-week integrated-skincare study in Canada. Until those publish, no retailer honestly knows the percentage improvement or the week it shows up, and we are not going to invent one. What is complete is the mechanism-of-action work, which is what this review is based on. We will update the product page and this article the day the data lands.
The Verdict: SkinCeuticals TNXA-SHOT Discoloration Defense
A Real Upgrade, Not a Rename
Why it earns the price: It is the only serum we carry that goes after all three pigment triggers and all three downstream steps in one formula, at a tranexamic acid dose 40% above its predecessor, in a texture that layers under SPF without pilling. The price held at $170 for 30 mL while the active list roughly doubled.
Best for: Persistent dark spots and brown patches that come back every summer, post-blemish marks that overstay, anyone mid-laser series, and anyone who gave up on the original because of the texture. Not for: someone whose only concern is a dull complexion (a vitamin C and SPF will do) or anyone who will not wear sunscreen daily. A tranexamic acid serum under an unprotected face is money on fire.
The SkinCeuticals Discolouration 8: The Routine Around TNXA-SHOT
SkinCeuticals published a routine card with the launch, and it is a sensible one. This is that routine as we would actually sell it, with live Canadian pricing.

TNXA-SHOT vs Phloretin CF vs Phyto A+ Brightening
Three SkinCeuticals products get asked for by name when someone says "dark spots". They are not interchangeable. The green column is the corrector; the other two are the morning antioxidant and the moisturizer that sit around it.
| TNXA-SHOT | Phloretin CF | Phyto A+ Brightening | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $170.00 | $230.00 | $155.00 |
| Job in the routine | Corrector, AM and PM | Morning antioxidant | Brightening moisturizer |
| Hero actives | 5% tranexamic acid, 3% Endophytol, 1% alpha-amino acid | Vitamin C, phloretin, ferulic acid | Phyto actives, brighteners |
| Pigment triggers addressed | UV, pollution, hormonal, stress | UV (antioxidant) | None directly |
| Tyrosinase and transfer | SymWhite 377 + 4% niacinamide | Vitamin C | Mild |
| Exfoliation | 0.15% LHA | None | None |
| Texture | Milky, lightweight | Water-light | Gel-cream |
| Best for | Persistent dark spots, laser season | Prevention, combination skin | Dullness, two-step mornings |
The verdict: If the question is which one corrects dark spots, it is TNXA-SHOT and it is not close. Phloretin CF is what you wear in front of it in the morning so new pigment is less likely to form, and Phyto A+ is the moisturizer for people who want brightness without a second serum. The complete morning is Phloretin CF, TNXA-SHOT, moisturizer, SPF.
Four Ways to Run TNXA-SHOT
Four to five drops to clean face and neck, morning and night, and give it a minute before the next layer. Pick the routine that matches your situation and run it for the whole bottle.
The standard discolouration routine
- ☀️ AM: Simply Clean > Phloretin CF > TNXA-SHOT > Phyto A+ Brightening > Physical Fusion SPF 50
- 🌙 PM: cleanse > TNXA-SHOT > moisturizer
- ⏱️ Twice a day, every day. Judge it at the end of the bottle, not the end of the week.
Around a laser or peel series
- 🩹 Treatment days: your provider's aftercare only; Advanced RGN-6 if they recommend it.
- 🌙 When cleared: cleanse > TNXA-SHOT > Advanced RGN-6, AM and PM, between sessions and for the months after.
- ☀️ Mineral SPF every morning without exception; no retinol or vitamin C until your provider says so.
With retinol
- ☀️ AM: cleanse > C E Ferulic or Phloretin CF > TNXA-SHOT > moisturizer > SPF
- 🌙 PM: cleanse > TNXA-SHOT, let it absorb > Retinol 0.3 two or three nights a week > moisturizer
- 🔁 Retinol speeds the shedding step; TNXA-SHOT handles the other three. They are better together than either alone.
Sensitive or deeper skin tones
- 🧪 Patch test behind the ear for two nights, then start once daily in the evening for a week.
- 🌙 Week 2 on: cleanse > TNXA-SHOT > Advanced RGN-6, then add the morning application.
- ☀️ A tinted mineral SPF matters more here: visible light contributes to pigment on deeper tones and iron oxides help block it.
Five Ways to Waste $170 on a Very Good Serum
1. Skipping sunscreen because the serum is "handling it"
Every active in this bottle is trying to turn pigment production down; unprotected daylight is turning it back up. Tranexamic acid without SPF is a treadmill. Physical Fusion SPF 50 every morning is not optional, it is the other half of the product.
2. Using it three times a week
The brand's instructions are morning and night. Pigment signalling is continuous, so the brake needs to be continuous too. If twice a day is unrealistic for you, buy a cheaper brightener and use that consistently instead.
3. Layering it over moisturizer
TNXA-SHOT goes on clean, dry skin after your vitamin C and before anything with an occlusive. Put it on top of a cream and the LHA and tranexamic acid are working on your moisturizer instead of your skin.
4. Restarting it the night after a laser
Freshly treated skin needs quiet. Resume when your provider clears actives, which is usually a few days and sometimes longer. Our post-procedure guide maps the recovery week.
5. Expecting it to erase every spot
Tranexamic acid, SymWhite and niacinamide are the strongest non-prescription tools for recurring pigment, and they are still topical. Deep dermal pigment and very old patches may need in-clinic help, with TNXA-SHOT as the maintenance layer. That is how the brand positions it and it is how we would use it.
Who Should Not Buy TNXA-SHOT
Anyone whose only complaint is dullness: start with a vitamin C from our vitamin C collection and a sunscreen, and add a corrector only if spots persist. Anyone mid-flare with a compromised barrier: calm it first with Advanced RGN-6 and introduce TNXA-SHOT once the skin is quiet. Anyone pregnant or nursing: tranexamic acid and LHA are widely used topically, but this is a conversation for your physician, not a product page. And anyone who still has a bottle of Discoloration Defense: finish it, it still works, then switch.
One more honest note. Discoloration Defense has been discontinued in Canada, which means remaining stock will drift onto marketplaces at tempting prices and some of it will be old. If a listing looks too cheap, read our piece on grey-market SkinCeuticals before you check out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is SkinCeuticals TNXA-SHOT Discoloration Defense?
A 30 mL daily brightening serum for persistent dark spots, launching in Canada in November 2026 at $170 CAD. Its patent-pending complex combines 5% tranexamic acid, 3% Endophytol and 1% alpha-amino acid with 4% niacinamide, 0.15% SymWhite 377, 0.15% LHA and 0.2% carnosine. It replaces Discoloration Defense.
Is TNXA-SHOT better than Discoloration Defense?
On paper, clearly. The tranexamic acid dose rose from 3% to 5%, two new actives target pollution- and hormone-triggered pigment, SymWhite 377 replaces kojic acid as the tyrosinase inhibitor, LHA replaces HEPES, carnosine is added, and the sticky yellow texture is gone. The brand reports the higher concentration improves results versus the original; the final clinical figures are not yet published.
When does TNXA-SHOT launch in Canada?
SkinCeuticals ships it to Canadian clinics and authorized retailers on November 2, 2026, with the in-clinic and online consumer launch on November 16, 2026. WeDoSkin's product page will go live on that date.
How do I use TNXA-SHOT?
Apply 4 to 5 drops to clean, dry face and neck morning and night. In the morning it goes after your vitamin C serum and before moisturizer and sunscreen; at night it goes before moisturizer or retinol.
Can I use TNXA-SHOT with vitamin C and retinol?
Yes. Morning: Phloretin CF or C E Ferulic first, then TNXA-SHOT, then moisturizer and SPF. Evening: TNXA-SHOT on clean skin, let it absorb, then retinol two or three nights a week to start. It is formulated to be layerable.
Is TNXA-SHOT safe for deeper skin tones and sensitive skin?
It is tested on all skin tones and formulated for all skin types including sensitive. The exfoliant is a gentle, slow-acting 0.15% LHA. If your skin is reactive, patch test and build up from once a day.
Can TNXA-SHOT be used with laser treatments for dark spots?
SkinCeuticals positions it as the at-home complement to laser treatments and reports it is physician-tested alongside them, because persistent pigment can resist laser alone and return afterward. Your provider decides when to resume actives after each session.
Where can I buy SkinCeuticals TNXA-SHOT in Canada?
WeDoSkin.ca is an authorized Canadian SkinCeuticals retailer. TNXA-SHOT Discoloration Defense is $170.00 CAD, ships free across Canada, and arrives as fresh, authentic stock from Canadian distribution from November 16, 2026.
